Maties and Hamiltons set for President’s Cup showdown

Reigning Super League A Champions Maties will play Hamiltons in the final of the President’s Cup Top 6 Competition.

The students defeated traditional rivals UCT 41 – 26 on Saturday to book their place in consecutive President’s Cup finals.

Munier Hartzenberg scored his 16th and 17th tries of the season while James Murphy and Jaco Gunter also got on the score sheet in another impressive Maties performance.

They will meet Hamiltons in the final after Niekkie Viljoen’s men 59 – 17 winners over False Bay at the Phillip Herbstein. The loss was the first home defeat for Jono van der Walt’s men this season and they will now focus all their attention on the Gold Cup which began on Saturday.

19 points from Hamiltons’ Top scorer Shane Vallender contributed to the big away win. Hamiltons scored eight tries in total including a brace from Louis Nel while Iewan Bartels took his individual try scoring tally to 18 for the season with another try on Saturday.

In the Bottom 8 semifinals, Union-Milnerton are through to the finals after a narrow 25 – 20 win over Brackenfell. They will play Vics after the students ran out 33 – 19 winners over SK Walmers.

Tries from Josh Powdrell, Adrian Roberts, Jodi Dennis, Thomas van Niekerk, as well as Captain Eddie Theron secured the win for Ishma-eel Dollie’s men.

The final of the President’s Cup Top 6 competition takes place on Monday 25th September at City Park.

Huge relegation battle at the Jan Burger, Hammies aim to halt the Maties train!

This weekend is the third last round of Super League A action and there is so much to play for in every game.

At the bottom of the table, NTK host Primrose in a must-win encounter for both sides. A bonus point win for Ashiq Wise’s men will see them leapfrog NTK out of the automatic relegation zone as they aim to finish what has been a tough year on a high note.

NTK have shown a tremendous fighting spirit despite spending the majority of the season in the relegation zone and have shown the ability to eke out wins when they need it most. The likes of Marco Marais and Jacobus Visser have been consistent performers for the club and will hope to lead them to another crucial victory over Primrose on Saturday.

At the opposite end of the table, there is a huge clash with title ramifications taking place at the Stephan Oval on Saturday as Hamiltons host the indomitable Maties.

The visitors have been on a tear of late, picking up bonus point wins at a rate of knots and have jumped into second place on the log going into this weekend’s clash. Pierre du Toit, Munier Hartzenberg, and Duncan Saal have accounted for 30 of the club’s tries this season and will once again look to get on the score sheet against Hamiltons.

Niekkie Viljoen’s will look back on the crucial losses to Durbell and Tygerberg as pivotal moments in the title race but they may have a major role to play in determining where the SLA Trophy ends up in 2017.

Belhar take on Union-Milnerton this Saturday at Accordian Park in desperate need of a win to boost confidence. After heavy losses to Maties and UWC, Bronson Weir’s men will need to be up for a fight against a Uni-mil side brimming with talent and confidence.

Ishma-eel Dollie’s men have already beaten Tygerberg, Durbell, and Vics in their maiden SLA campaign and will look to tick Belhar’s name off the list come Saturday.

Brackenfell travel to Pniel looking for their fifth win of the season.

2017 has not been as successful for Johann Kotze’s men but should they pick up a win on Saturday and results go their way in the other matches, they could end the weekend in 10th place on the log. In Darian Hock, Wouter Whitmore, and Vivian Nel, they should have too much firepower for the winless Pniel Villagers.

Vics host SK Walmers on Saturday and will hope for an immediate turnaround following last weekend’s shock defeat by Union-Milnerton. SK Walmers meanwhile have hauled themselves away from the relegation zone but could be clawed back should they suffer a heavy defeat at the Danie Craven. SK Walmers usually perform when their backs are against the wall so do not count them out this weekend.

Durbell host an in-form UWC in their final game of the season. Bobby Joubert’s men will look to end the campaign on a high but will need to keep an eye on the likes of Aidynn Cupido, Byron Isaacs, and Andre Manuel who have all been in sensational form of late.
