Tygerberg fall short in George!

Tygerberg’s dream start to the Gold Cup was brought to a halt on a cold and wet day in George on Saturday.

Inclement weather conditions greeted Ricky Petersen and his men as they ran out against Progress in their second round clash.

With a heavily waterlogged pitch, Tygerberg were unable to gain any form of rhythm in order to release their dangerous backline.

In what was an old-school battle of attrition, it was the hosts who eventually prevailed 17 – 15. It was clear that home ground advantage was a significant factor with Progress managing to cope with the tough playing conditions better than their opponents.

Tygerberg’s tries were score by Ricardo Cornelius and Tyron Scholtz.

Tygerberg have a bye this weekend before returning to Florida Park on the 30th September to take on Swallows.

False Bay maintain unbeaten start after win in Kathu!

Marcello Sampson in action against Sishen

False Bay overcame tough playing conditions to down Sishen 35 – 25 in Kathu in the second round of Gold Cup action on Saturday.

The win sees Jono van der Walt’s men lead Pool D on 10 points after securing back-to-back bonus point wins.

A hat-trick from flying winger Marcello Sampson as well as a try from flanker Jody Reyneke secure the hard-fought bonus point win for the Bay who also had tries by Dyllon Frylinck and Danie Roux disallowed.

“It was a tough, physical game in Kathu,” van der Walt told CRTV. “We’re happy to come away with the five points.”

False Bay returned to Cape Town on a high and can go into their bye weekend full of confidence ahead of their clash against Western Suburbs on Saturday 30th September at the Phillip Herbstein.

WP Club Rugby flavor at Grabouw 7’s!

There was a large WP Club Rugby contingent at the Grabouw 7’s held over the weekend.

Kuilsriver, Sir Lowrians, Belhar, and Rangers were among the 16 teams participating in the tournament held at Pineview Park in Grabouw.

16 teams took part in 4 groups. The groups comprised mixed teams from Boland and WP.

Kuilsriver made it all the way to the final where they were beaten 21 – 12 by the Kraaifontein Rebels.

The tournament was ideal preparation for the WP Club Rugby 7’s which starts on 14th October.

False Bay have touched down in Kathu ahead of their second Gold Cup match against Sishen on Saturday.

The long bus journey began last night and the team is finally settled ahead of another tough encounter.

Sishen are veterans of the Gold Cup and have made their home ground in Kathu a fortress in year’s gone by.

“Sishen will be a very tough challenge for us this weekend,” False Bay Head Coach Jono van der Walt told CRTV.

“They are no strangers to Gold cup rugby having been in this national club competition for the last 5 years in a row so it’s not their first rodeo.”

False Bay are unchanged from the team that beat Boland Champions Roses 43 – 19 last weekend.

Masi beat Callies in Thursday night action

Masiphumelele put a difficult few weeks behind them when they beat Caledonian Roses 12 – 6 in their Promotion League clash on Thursday night.

The game took place at the home of False Bay, the Phillip Herbstein Stadium rather than Masi’s usual Noordhoek home.

Caledonian Roses, donning their new first team jerseys, gave a good account of themselves but were unable to build on last weekend’s 26 – 25 win over Promotion League leaders Blue Stars United.

Tries by Lionel Farao and Sifungo Ramncwana and a conversion by Malabo Totshini saw Masi home to a narrow win.

The win sees Masi climb to fourth on the log but there is still some way to go to catch the teams above them.

Masi travel to Primrose Park to take on Manenberg Rangers this Saturday while Caledonian Roses host Blue Jets.

Brinkhuis hoping to lead Helderberg into Super League A!

Name: Randy Brinkhuis
Club: Helderberg
Age: 22
Height: 1.78m
Weight: 70kg
Position: Fullback/Flyhalf
Lives in: Sir Lowry’s Pass, Somerset West

Helderberg’s Randy Brinkhuis will be hoping to make his comeback from a long-term ankle injury in time for the promotion/relegation clash against NTK.

The 22 year-old was in sensational form before injury curtailed his season, scoring 120 points. Despite the lengthy layoff, he still managed to end the season as the 4th highest point scorer in Super League B.

Brinkhuis is part of a core group of talented youngsters including Ovian Engelbrecht, Ryan Solomons, and Alvino Anthony.

The youthful side, coached by Lin Beukes, made waves in Super League B to end in third position.

At the core of the side is Brinkhuis. The nippy playmaker is a deadly accurate kicker and possesses a nose for the try line, crossing over six times this season. He is equally adept at both flyhalf and fullback having alternated between both positions this season.

“Randy is coming off a serious ankle injury,” Beukes told CRTV. “We let him do a strict rehab program but he’s training full out and will definitely be playing against Bellville.”

A fully fit and raring-to-go Brinkhuis is quite a prospect, Helderberg will be hoping they get the best form of their talisman ahead of what is a season-defining playoff match.
