This weekend will see the completion of round one in Super League A, with several positions at stake.
We’ll see the log end with which clubs will be placed in first and second place for the guaranteed semi-finals, the determination of the top six clubs which will play in the league championships and the dreaded unlucky thirteenth place on the log. Thirteenth on the log will end up playing the promotion relegation match.
Position one is taken by Stellenbosch with neither False Bay nor Durbell able to compete for this spot. Durbell face Tygerberg this weekend and will be up against some tough opposition as Tygerberg showed their merit with a recent 34 – 33 win over UCT. False Bay face Brackenfell and hope for a four point win that will secure their second place position.
UCT must be kicking themselves after letting the win slip to Tybergerg , they now need a win against Union Milnerton to jump over current sixth place Victorians to make it into the Top 6.
At the bottom of the log the permutations are more complicated to avoid the unlucky thirteenth spot. If UWC beat NTK then NTK go to play offs, if NTK win with four log points then UWC got to playoffs. The interesting factor is that, if NTK win with a bonus point and UWC get two bonus points from the match, then Villagers, who are currently in eleventh on the log will go to the play offs due to points difference. Villagers, who have exhausted all their matches, must now sit on the sidelines knowing the matter is now out of their hands.
Super League B has certainly gained the reputation for being the league of death. Some teams still have two games in hand and the top six can still be determined mathematically by 11 teams. Helderberg retained their top spot on the log after their 25-15 win over Kraaifontein and Franschhoek are still in second spot, after beating Rangers 62-22. These two face off this weekend and Helderberg who now play their final match will know that this is a must win game to secure position two. Paarl, Bellville and Kuilsriver remain in contention for the second place. Kuilsriver will look to bounce back after their 33-32 loss to Hamlets as they host Bellville who come off a healthy 44-27 win over All Saints.
You can watch the highlights of the Kuilsriver vs Bellville match, along with Coaches and Captains interviews on Cape Rugby TV on DStv ch263 next week Wednesday at 9pm.
After their one point midweek one point, 28-27 loss to Rangers at Surrey Estate, Hands and Hearts remain in the relegation zone along with All Saints, Pniel Villagers and Kraaifontein.
After their 31-12 win over Sir Lowrians, Macassar remain unbeaten in Super League C and firmly in first place on the log. Goodwood who come off a narrow 27-26 win over Blue Jets are still looking for bragging rights and are still in with a chance to take top spot with two games in hand and their penultimate match against Strand. Macassar will know they have their work cut out for them as they travel to Blue Jets.
The promotion league got off to a good start this past weekend, and it was again Masiphumelele who showed their intentions by beating Van der Stel Evergreens 40-20, taking pole position. This lead however is only on points difference as the log points are shared with Blue Stars, who beat rivals Raithby Universals 33-24.
This weekend will see more teams face each other for the first time after the promotion league merge. Lagunya get their first shot at getting on the board as they host Raithby Universals. These teams will now also be thinking strategically as their next match after Saturday will be on Wednesday evening.
The Paarl League has now also begun their Top and Bottom 6 competitions, with the early risers being Lower Paarl, Albions and Riverstones in the Paarl Region Top 6 challenge. Lower Paarl beat Young Standards 53-10, Albions beat Young Gardens 53-24 while Riverstones beat Allandale 41-33.
The two Simonsberg region teams. Lamotte and Faure, who entered the Paarl Division Bottom Six challenge went head to head this past weekend, with a 28-16 win for Faure. Things will now get interesting for both these sides as they will face their new competitors for the first time. Lamotte travel to Daljosafat to face Violets (Paarl) while Faure is up against Simondium.
