The time is almost upon us to close another chapter in WPRFU.
Looking back at 2017, I’m happy to say that we are still moving strongly in the direction to accomplish our “Towards 2020” strategic plan.
We once again saw the growth of rugby on the local level on several fronts. Remarkably, we are up on player numbers yet again, now with more than 14 000 registered players within the WP Club Rugby structures.
This year in excess of 2800 fixtures were scheduled, excluding friendlies. The player and fixture stats gained a significant boost from the WPRFU Score Sevens, which saw more than 1000 players register and take to the field from 44 teams over 6 weeks. The sevens competition in it’s current format is a unique event in the world of rugby, with each team receiving their own player jerseys, courtesy of Score Energy drinks.
Youth rugby continued to impress with victories in all age groups and additional delivery from the junior referees ranks. Additionally, our HUBS development programme continued to bring transformation in the youth ranks with 2500 players from u9 to u19.
Our BestMed school of Excellence programme continued their delivery of excellence, building on from last year, as we this year saw the most diversity from represented schools all over Western Province. The attention to skills and conditioning impressed on the field under the watchful eye of School of Excellence Manager, Wilfred Cupido.
We trust that these developments and talent identification programmes will continue to keep WP Rugby as the leading province, as we seek to remain the Currie Cup champions.
Our referees society is particularly happy with some their achievements, including the delivery of six test referees, four of them being the top ranked referees in the country.
“Standing together” was our theme this year and our hashtag #westandtogether delivered on its mission, that being our WP Rugby family standing together under all conditions. This was evident from watching the social media shares and all the variety of content on TV with our partners, Cape Rugby TV.
Considering the above, I’d like to thank our club rugby supporters and sponsors for yet another fantastic year of contribution to WP Club Rugby, without who, none of the above would have been possible.
I am aware the many of our club are still busy with year-end functions and a number already busy with pre- and off-season training. Please take care to be safe out there under all circumstances.
The WP Rugby offices will re-open on 8th of January 2018.
On behalf of the WPRFU I’d like to wish all our players, administrators, fans and sponsors a blessed festive season. Please be careful on the roads and stay safe out there.
Until next week
