The 2017 Rugby season is at an end. It has been a trying year at the WPRFU but we remain optimistic of reaching our “Towards 2020” strategic goals which spells out our vision and values that will inspire and drive all our activities, on and off the field as we strive to become a High Performance Organization.
My sincere appreciation and thanks are extended to all members of the Executive Committee for their support, advice and loyalty during debates and challenging situations. Thank you to the Members of the General Council, to which I am accountable, for tough but constructive debates on pertinent matters.
I am positive about the future of WP Rugby and will continue to strive, together with our Executive members, Club Delegates and our valued staff to steer this wonderful organization towards success.
The year 2017 was an immensely successful year for club rugby, culminating in the WPRFU Score Sevens tournament held over a six week period during October and November. The event saw more than 1000 players register from 44 club.
During the club rugby season we witnessed the passion and commitment of our clubs that never wavered throughout the year.
Club Rugby forms the backbone of rugby in our province. It also plays a major role to unite communities of all race groups, creed and religion.
Furthermore, one of the pillars of the WPRFU has been to foster youth development in underprivileged areas. The WPRFU HUBS Development program together with the re-launch of the RDP Programme continued to make great strides in harnessing local rugby talent.
I must commend the work done by the HUBS team who has worked tirelessly to grow the game at grassroots level in Western Province.
It was also fantastic to see our local club rugby stars break into the professional setups with no less than twenty non contracted players from clubs being included in the 2017 DHL WP Supersport Rugby Challenge training squad and 12 going on to represent DHL WP in this competition.
Congratulations to all our league winners as well as the winners of the various club rugby competitions. You have made your communities and of course, your Union very proud indeed.
To all our sponsors, partners, and suppliers, thank you for your support and contributions this past year. We look forward to working with you again in the New Year. Best wishes and safe travels over the festive period.
To our loyal club rugby supporters, you are the backbone of our wonderful club rugby structures and without your unwavering support none of the progress we have made over the last few years would have been possible. Your commitment to your club is what inspires us to continue to grow the game at club level.
We wish you well over the festive period and a happy and healthy New Year.
